Spa treatments are the services that a spa provides. In contemporary times the growing demand of Spa makes it ubiquitous. People throng to Spas to restore their health and beauty. The most popular spa treatment is massage which has been around for thousands of years and has several health benefits. The Spa treatment is based on centuries old Ayurvedic health principles that help in restoring the balance between physical, emotional and spiritual energies.
Snehana or Abhyanga means Oleation (oiling up). This is a gentle whole body massage from head to toe with warm medicated oil. The person undergoing this massage is seated on a wooden plank specially made for the massage known as 'Droni'. Depending on the person's prakruti (psychosomatic constitution) and the illness, Ayurveda experts choose massage oils. After diagnosing the person's body type, an Ayurveda expert mixes the herbal essence and ingredients so that the person can get maximum benefits from the massage. Two masseurs stand on either side of the person and apply herbal oil on the whole body and massage gently. The massage is done on the neck, ears, shoulders, chest and back.
The 'Marma' therapy is followed while doing Abhyanga. Marma are the vital points of the body which contain (life) energy (Prana). Upon these vital Marma points Ayurvedic oil is poured and firm pressure is given on Marma while doing the massage. Abhyanga massage is very relaxing as it re-energizes the Prana energy of the body and mind that leads to ultimate healing. This massage produces softness, strength and colour to the body. It also decreases the effects of aging, bestows good vision and nourishes the body. Through this massage one can also improve appetite, reduces stress level and build the body’s immunity.
Some of the popular Ayurvedic oils used in this therapy are Sesame, Almond, Mustard, Ashwagandha or Ashwagandha/Bala oils, Mahanarayan, Bhringaraj or Brahmi oils, sunflower or coconut, Neem and many more oils based on the requirement of the person's body.
Shiro Dhara is also one of the most important treatments in Ayurveda that provides peace to patient and brings tranquil feelings from within. In this treatment patient lies on a wooden bed in a comfortable position and medicated oil is applied on the head and body. Then masseur swings back and forth specially designed apparatus over the patient's body, which is filled with the medicated oil, placed at a specific height. The dripping of approximately one litre of warm herbal oil on the key energy points of the body balances the energy flow and purifies the body, mind and spirit. This process is repeated after drying the body and head with towel.
Depending on the nature of the ailment this treatment is done repeatedly or on the specific body parts. This is a special therapy for relieving stress and strain of the entire body. It rejuvenates and revitalises the human mind and body that helps in lessening the ageing effect. The slow and steady flow of warm medicated oil on various body parts helps in curing insomnia, depression, cervical spondylosis, headaches, migraine and sinusitis. It also helps in improving memory.
It is a treatment for all kinds of skeletal and muscular diseases including Rheumatoid Arthritis, osteoarthritis, lumbago, sciatica and neuropathy. ‘Pizhichil’ literally means ‘squeezing’ and the patient lies on Droni (a wooden bed specially designed for the purpose) and then prescribed medicated oil is applied on the entire body including the head. During the treatment about 20 litres of warm medicated oil continuously poured over the patient's body and massaged. The massage is done very slowly with light pressure on specific body parts which enhances muscular tone and retunes the entire nervous system.
The procedure of Navarakizhi is a two-step process, firstly patient's body is smeared with suitable medicated oil and massaged in seven different postures such as sitting, lying etc. After that the muslin tea bags are used to thump the body, with extra focus on the nerve part of the body. These muslin bags are filled with cooked Navara rice which is cooked in cow’s milk with a specific herbal mixture. After which these bags are dipped in the herbal oil mixture and then applied over the whole body of the patient. These bundles are interchanged when they loose their warmth. This is the perfect spa treatment for the person who is suffering from diseases of nervous system, joint pain, emaciation of limbs, rheumatic diseases and diseases borne of vitiated blood.
It is a traditional healing treatment which is applied in the case of facial paralysis and diseases of the head and neck. In this treatment lukewarm medicated oil is poured into a cap which is put on the head for 15 to 60 minutes. A leather sleeve of about six to eight inches in length is placed on the shaven head of the patient and a band (vartti)is tied around the forehead to keep it in place. The medicated oil which is used in this process is specially prepared with the help of winter cherry, staff tree, castor oil, common milk, black gram etc. This treatment is appropriate for the patient who is suffering from migraine, rheumatism, arthritis, abscesses, cranial nerves and facial paralysis etc.
Some of the other well known Spa Treatments are Facial Massage, Face Pack, Thakradhara and Nasyam which are used in the treatment of various diseases.
