Ayurveda in India teaches a systematic approach based on inherent natural principles to maintain individual's body, mind and spirit in absolute balance with nature. It is a traditional medicinal treatment procedure native to the Indian Subcontinent, which became popular throughout the world as a form of alternative medicine. In India, Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term consisting of the two words 'ayus' and 'veda', 'Ayus' means life and 'Veda' means knowledge or science. Thus, it means 'the knowledge of life' or 'the science of life'.
India Ayurveda emphasizes on the prevention of disease, rejuvenation of body systems, and the extension of life span. It is considered as the oldest form of healthcare in the world and this approach of medical system originated in India thousands of year ago. The fundamentals of India Ayurvedic treatments can be found in the 'Vedas' (Hindu holy book of wisdom). The Rig Veda (one of the five books of Vedas), which was written over 6,000 years ago, contains a series of natural prescriptions that can help humans to overcome various ailments.
The sole objective of this holistic medicinal approach is to prevent illness, heal the sick and preserve life. Ayurveda in India is based on the concept that the universe is made up of five elements air, fire, water, earth and celestial matters. These elements are represented in human body by three energies or doshas in the form of Vata, Pitta and Kapha. And any imbalance in these doshas makes the body lose its equilibrium. The distinct balance of these energies varies from one individual to another and the well being of a person depends on getting the right balance of the three doshas (or tridoshas). India Ayurvedic centres provide specific lifestyle and guidelines for people to keep the doshas in balance to remain healthy.
